June marks LGBT Pride month. While this month is often associated with parades, parties, and celebrations, it started because of the Stonewall Riots. These were violent demonstrations by the LGBT community after a police raid that began on June 28th, 1969, in NYC. It is the event that triggered the modern gay liberation movement and the fight for LGBT rights. It feels inappropriate to have a celebratory pride this year, given the recent police brutality against people of color. Because of this, I am going to spend time learning about current and historical LGBTQ people of color this month. .
